Catching up again

School has been keeping me pretty busy, especially with work tacked on top. But I managed to make a few really cute Bento so far this week and have ideas for the rest of the week as well. School is going fantastic and I enjoy learning the different things we can do with touch to help each other become a more healed individual. I've made a lot of friends within my group and really look forward to watching them grow.

I cannot believe it's Feb already!!! What the heck?! Oh well more Bento themes for Valentines Day I suppose. Although it's probably one of my least favorite holidays. I made some "functional" Bento for Monday that included some delicious baby bok choy that I sauteed up. It was a meat free day. It's part of an idea I read about called Flexitarian. Meaning you replace meat in smaller portions with veggie protein for part of the week, but still eat meat too. It's something I am toying with in my head.

There is only one picture because Logician had originally intended to take and eat the Curry Chicken salad sammich I forgot in the car (he put it in the fridge when he got home) on the way to work on Sunday. He bought me some nummy sushi I nommed instead. As you can see this one is pretty functional and not excessively pretty. There isn't even any rice. I was that lazy.
More after the jump.

So these two took FOREVER to make but it was fun and well worth the effort. The top one is of course Logicians, complete with pink egg white hearts and nori smaller hearts. I decided to try the colored egg idea and was a bit skeptical of whether or not the dye would change the flavor. It didn't, so I will be making some more again later. I cut the hearts out with a small heart shaped cutter I got after christmas. It was in a set of holiday cutters that were $1.00. :)

I then made some turkey burgers that have little bits of cheese in them. I thought they were quite tasty. I also broke EVERY rule I have ever read about making onigiri to make them for these Bento. I used Jasmine Rice (which is long grain, big no no), that was cold (it should be warm), and was made several hours before (it's best to do when it's freshly made). They didn't hold together when I ate them but they look pretty! I have to make more rice tomorrow morning when I make Bento for Thursday so I will make proper ones then.

So for today's lunch we have:

This is mine, which after it was finished Logician added a cut snow pea to my rice to make a face (a la Leland from Dr. Chan [see youtube] who screams "Toystore!" about five times in an episode). I was being rather lazy with the Bento but they still look pretty cute in my personal opinion. My top tier is filled with a baby bok choy, carrot, green bell pepper, mushroom, and beef stir fry that has a bit of Teriyaki and Soy Sauce in it. The eyes of my rice are made with dried umeboshi that I bought from JList. It took forever for them to get here but they're tasty.

Logician took the pictures for me and for some reason my phone turned them orange. I corrected the color but it lost some of the neon pink of the egg. I put a few egg shapes on my stir fry (to use it up) and cut out a cute message for Logician with the heart shaped cutter and a set of clay molding letters that a friend from school gave me brand new and unopened! YAY!

I think it's pretty damn cute. His bottom box is another "functional" so I will spare you a picture of it. But I like the hearts. In fact I think my next try might be the stars - if the nori doesn't anger me.

Happy Hump Day!
